With all of us heading back to our work spaces again, it’s important to get back to the routine in a way that would not hamper our day to day lives. When there is a certain level of order in place, there is a considerable amount of time, effort and energy saved in doing our daily chores.

Why is it important? What do we gain from it and Why do we need it?

An article published in February 2021 talks about how having a home which has a lot of clutter and mess can lead to lower levels of mental focus, increase our stress, and can also cause serious mental illnesses like depression. The link to the article is given below.

From my own personal experience, I find it extremely relaxing when objects are in their designated places.

Basic Home Organisation can be done using these principles.

1. Decluttering and Sorting

The task of removing things from various spaces of your home will be a tough one. Make it a memorable family bonding exercise which would also bring in a sense of responsibility. Once you remove the clutter, start your process of sorting. Throw, donate or repurpose them based on your needs. Clean and sanitise the space completely before you start reorganising it. Refrain from getting emotionally attached to things as it would defeat the whole purpose of this task.

Pro tip: Your clothes could be sorted based on different seasons, occasions etc. Similarly, your books, spices, utensils, crockery, cutlery and kitchen appliances can be arranged based on your process of needs.

2. Give everything a place

“A place for everything, everything in its place” is a quote by Benjamin Franklin which is apt for this principle. Take some effort to think about how you work on a daily basis and assign places for all the things based on it. You can buy baskets, additional shelves, hangers, boxes, hooks and other things to sort your stuff and even label them.

3. Allow for some extra room

Since we live in a world which is based on never ending needs, have extra space in your drawers, closets and other storage areas for additional things that you would buy in the near future.

4. Maintain it

Maintain the system of organisation as you have put in so much of effort to do it. Figure out methods to maintain it or take someone’s help to do it if you do not have the time. You can also periodically evaluate if the system is working and make changes to it as and when you feel it’s required.

A home is a safe haven for you and your family. By having an organised home, you make it an even more relaxing space. Make this your new year resolution and get going!
